After studying English Literature and Film Studies as an undergraduate at the University of Exeter (2010-13), followed by an MA in Film Studies at the University of Warwick (2013-14), Chris completed his doctoral research at the University of Exeter in 2018.

His thesis - 'Cinema on the Front Line' - examines the role of the cinema as it intersected with the lives of those who served for Britain during the First World War, shining a light on a largely unacknowledged history within the discipline of film studies and military history. Chris is particularly interested in the history of cinematic exhibition for military audiences on the front lines themselves, often in very close proximity to the dangers of the battlefield.

More broadly, his research interests include silent cinema, British film history, exhibition studies and the work of silent comedian Charlie Chaplin. Chris has begun to publish his work in a number of academic journals including Early Popular Visual Culture and has forthcoming articles in Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television and Film History. Chris is currently developing plans for his next major research project (provisionally) titled ‘Behind the scenes: meta-movies and the representation of film production, exhibition and reception in silent cinema’.

As a PT (Postgraduate Teacher) during the 2016/17 and 2017/18 academic years, Chris has taught seminar groups for the Level 2 module 'Adaptation: Text, Image, Culture'. Chris has also taught as a guest tutor on EAF3513: British Screens, and as a tutor for the University of Exeter's Widening Participation programme. He will be teaching on 'Shots in the Dark' during the 2018/19 academic year.

Beyond his academic work Chris is a keen film fan and critic, having written for numerous publications. He been involved with the establishment and organisation of an award winning film society where he resided on the film selection committee, produced promotional material, including literature and short films, and introduced screenings for over 150 people. Chris has also volunteered at the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and sits on the museum's board as its student representative.
