Hasnul Djohar researches culture, ethnicity, and identity in Contemporary Muslim-American Women's' Writing, especially in the works of Mohja Kahf, Diana Abu-Jaber, Shaila Abdullah, Laila Halaby, and Randa Jarrar. Originally from West Sumatera, Indonesia, she took a BA in English and Arabic from Indonesian University of Education, Bandung. As a Fulbright awardee, she completed her MA Degree in English Literature from Central Michigan University, Michigan, The USA in 2013. Her MA thesis was entitled “Gender Fairness in the Jakarta Post: Are Sure You are Innocent?” and was awarded with the highest distinction.

She has been teaching English Literature at Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta State Islamic University in Indonesia since 2010. She is currently studying at the University of Exeter for Indonesian Endowment (LPDP) Funded PhD in English Literature.
