Jake is a third-year doctoral candidate based jointly at the University of Exeter and the Università di Pisa. He studies the history of early-modern Europe and is currently writing a doctoral thesis on the free port of Livorno in the seventeenth century.

Before beginning work on the PhD, Jake studied at the University of Cambridge where he completed a BA in history (first-class honours) and was awarded the Trevelyan History Prize. He then completed an MPhil in medieval history, also at Cambridge.

Jake is funded by the European Research Council project AveTransRisk. He is supervised by Professor Maria Fusaro (Exeter) and Professor Andrea Addobbati (Pisa). He is currently based in Pisa.
