After obtaining a BA in History and Art History from Emory University in 1996, I worked as a field archaeologist for six years. From 2004-2005, I received additional training in Human Osteology at the University of West Florida. Since 2007, I have specialised in mortuary archaeology, working for both private cultural resource management firms and state agencies. I have done fieldwork/osteological work in Ireland, Germany, Serbia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, as well as across the United States.
From 2008-2013, I was involved in the excavation of the Third Street Cemetery (a large Catholic graveyard Dubuque, Iowa), and the subsequent research and analysis. The University of Iowa Press published a book about the project, co-authored by myself and Robin Lillie. Dubuque's Forgotten Cemetery: Excavating a Nineteenth-century Burial Ground in a Twenty-first-century City received the 2017 James Deetz book award presented by the Society for Historical Archaeology.
I was awarded my doctoral degree in October 2020.
