Project Summary

My thesis examines the history and imagery of surviving medieval stained glass schemes and fragments located in parish churches across the South West region of England. It seeks to ground these arrangements within their original social, spiritual and viewing contexts in order to understand the role glass imagery served in religious experience.

Wider Research Interests

My research interests broadly revolve around the history of art and religion in the later medieval and early modern periods, with a particular focus on the interaction between visual culture, religious practice and the parish. I am keen to study the architecture, furnishing and imagery of parish churches in order to rebalance the impression of lay religion commonly laid out in textual sources.
