After my Bachelors in German and French at the University of Durham, I spent several years in Berlin, working as a freelance translator, historical guide and journalist. In December 2007 and in need of a new challenge, I moved to St. Petersburg where I worked as an English teacher and taught myself Russian. This was the beginning of a fascination which inspired my return to the University of Exeter to undertake an MA in International Relations. Returning to Russia at every opportunity, both as a tourist and a professional, I formulated my PhD in contemporary Russian politics. The title is 'Obshchestvennyi Kontrol'' (public scrutiny) from Discourse to Action in Contemporary Russia: The Emergence of Authoritarian Neoliberal Governance'. I passed my viva in October 2014 subject to minor corrections.
