Gareth JamesEmail: g.a.james@ex.ac.uk School: College of Humanities I completed my PhD at Exeter in April 2011, with a thesis examining the history of American cable network Home Box Office. This looked to rethink standard discussions of the network's success as a brand by emphasising institutional continuities as a subscription service from 1972 to 2007. More broadly, the thesis suggested the value of historical research into tangible, networked contexts of contemporary television and media branding. The thesis was examined internally by Steve Neale and externally by Paul Grainge of the University of Nottingham. During the PhD I presented papers on HBO at various conferences, and have also published articles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, trans-media marketing, as well as book reviews, and forthcoming encyclopaedia articles on American independent cinema. I have also taught on Culture and Criticism I, Shots in the Dark and American Independent Cinema. In 2008 I co-organized the BAAS postgraduate conference 'America: Real and Imagined' with Lewis Ward and Andrew Nelson. |
