Lisa Rose Stead

Lisa is originally from Wiltshire and first came to Exeter in 2002 to study for a BA in English and Film, further undertaking an MA in Film at the University of Nottingham in 2006. After completing her MA Lisa took a year out, with a prolonged stay in Southern India, funded on and off through commissions for painting, artwork and photography.

Lisa has now completed her PhD at Exeter, examined in May 2011 for her thesis entitled 'Women's Writing and British Female Film Culture in the Silent Era' and passing with minor modifications. The thesis was examined by Prof Sarah Street (Bristol) and Prof Steve Neale (Exeter). The thesis focused upon women’s literary engagement with silent cinema as generative of a female film culture, looking at materials such as fan letters, fan magazines, popular novels, short story papers, novelizations, critical journals and newspaper criticism. This project was fully funded by the AHRC.

During her studies at Exeter, Lisa has co-run the Film Studies Reading Group with Andrew Nelson and the Twentieth Century Reading Group with Georgina Wilms, and volunteered as a cataloguing assistant at the Bill Douglas Centre, where she now acts as Student Representative for the Board.

Lisa has also acted as Teaching Assistant Representative for the PGSSLC for two years running, and has organized three conference at Exeter across her doctorate; Studies Beyond the Screen (April 2009); Reclamation and Representation: the boundaries of the literary archive (Oct 2010) and Interfaces: encounters beyond the page / screen / stage (Jan 2011).

Lisa has previously taught first year critical theory, and is currently teaching on the second and third year undergraduate films modules Shots in the Dark: American Film in Profile and Film and Literature: Textual Transformations.
