Biography

I am currently finalizing a PhD in Sociology (which I started in 2009), supported by a Research Fellowship from FCT – the Foundation for Science and Technology of the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES).

My thesis, supervised by Professors Tia DeNora and Andrew Pickering, is in the field of Music Sociology but very interdisciplinary (Social Psychology of Music, Music Performance Studies, Science&Technology Studies).

The research activities have included a Visiting Fellowship at the Faculty of Music of the University of Cambridge (October 2010-March 2011). The ISFLUP - the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto is also one of the host institutions of the research activities.

I did my BA in Sociology at the University of Porto (1992-1997, 5 years course with final thesis) and a Research MA also in Sociology (National Societies towards the Challenges of Globalization) at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) (1998-2001).

My BA thesis was in the Sociology of Health, under the supervision of Professor José Azevedo, and the Research MA thesis in the field of Music Sociology, under the supervision of Professor João Arriscado Nunes (the latter with support of a FCT Research Fellowship).

I did studies in Music (Viola) at the Conservatory of Music of Porto (1995-2001) and at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (The Netherlands) (in Performance, Pedagogy and Early Music) (2001-2006).

I have worked as a free-lance violist and in 2006-7 I have taught Musical Expression at Primary Public Schools in Porto.

Earlier I did an apprenticeship as a Sociologist/Researcher at the Social Observatory of the Northern Social Welfare Centre in Porto (1998-1999) and more recently worked as Assistant Researcher for an FCT funded project on Gender and Clubbing in Porto (2007-2008), at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto and under the supervision of Professor João Teixeira Lopes.

I am a member of the SocArts Research Group at the University of Exeter (UK) and a Researcher at ISFLUP - Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (Portugal).
