HIH1401 Approaches to History

1st September 2013 to 1st January present

HIH1400 Making History

For this academic year, I teach two seminar groups of first year undergraduates on the Making History module. Making History aims to provide students with the essential practical and intellectual tools that they will need for the successful study of History. It is an introduction to the working practices expected of a history student, and aims to transform students into historians with the skills to carry out their own research. Students work in groups on a particular historiographical research project, present their findings to other students, and reflect on their practice as historians.

This year, students I teach are working on topics in African History, focusing on the Mau Mau Rebellion in Kenya, gender history in Africa, historical treatments of witchcraft in Africa, and the process of decolonization on the African continent.

I am responsible for setting the research projects for students, providing formative feedback, and carrying out the formal assessment for the module.
