Project Summary

My thesis studies the translation of the genre of Khutba- Islamic Friday sermons. It specifically aims to identify the strategies that interpreters employ to render metaphor when encountered in this genre. To achieve this aim, a parallel corpus will be compiled, of around 1,000,000 words. This corpus will consist of the Arabic transcripts of the Friday Khutbas delivered at the two Grand Mosques in Mecca and Medina over almost five years, and the transcripts of the interpretations of these Khutbas into English. In addition, interviews will be carried out with some of the interpreters of these Khutbas.
