This project is an analysis of medical interpreting. It aims for a better understanding of the experiences, particularities and challenges of medical interpreting. I will start my investigation by looking at the codes of ethics and practice that regulate medical interpreting and I will analyse what interpreters, clinicians and interpreting agency staff think about it. The formal understanding of the role of interpreters will be complemented with experiences of interpreting reflected in clinicians’, interpreters’ and patients’ stories. I would like to implement the results of my study (especially concerning best practice) in the interpreting practices and to recommend possible new guidelines concerning the specific role and responsibilities of medical interpreters.
I studied philosophy at the “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iasi, Romania and finished my first PhD in 2002 with a thesis about the history of ontological categories. Between 2000 and 2009 I was senior lecturer at the chair in “History of philosophy and hermeneutics” at the same university. Following my interest in German philosophy I had various research stays and gave several talks at German universities and research centres: Magdeburg, Constance, Hanover, Freiburg, Bonn, Stuttgart and Tubingen. Since 2010 I have been teaching Medical Humanities at the Medical School, University of Exeter. I work for the European Commission as an ethics expert and exercise my linguistic and cultural skills as a medical interpreter. My research interests encompass medical sociology, bioethics, hermeneutics, ethics of care, and postmodern philosophy.
