Since being ordained as an Anglican priest, in 1975, I have worked in Local Authority social services, mental health and higher education as a psychiatric social worker, chartered psychologist, psychology lecturer, social work tutor and practice supervisor.

However, an important and fulfilling part of my working life has been in the field of healthcare chaplaincy, initially leading a team in a South London psychiatric hospital before moving to Plymouth where, after university and local authority jobs, I managed a department of pastoral and spiritual care for ten years. This was in a large NHS Trust providing specialist care across the Southwest. More recently, I was palliative care lead chaplain to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London and am now chaplain to a Marie Curie hospice in North London.

Moving from London twenty years ago, Devon became home and played a formative part in my life. On returning to London in 2011, I became priest vicar and chaplain to Westminster Abbey before taking up my current post with Marie Curie, although I continue as a priest vicar at Westminster Abbey. Nonetheless, I and my wife continue to maintain roots in Devon, with a home in Buckfast, and an association both with Exeter University and Exeter Cathedral where I remain a prebendary emeritus.

Besides book reviews, I have written on Islamic healthcare ethics: see 'Islamic medical ethics and the straight path of God', Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, Volume 16, Issue 3 July 2005 , pages 213 - 225.
