Project Summary

My project focusses on the Annunciation to Mary in Counter-Reformation art, from the perspective of the interpretation of the biblical narrative by artists who were affiliated with the Catholic Church in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century.

Supervisory Team

I am co-supervised by Associate Professor Louise Lawrence (Theology and Religion, University of Exeter), Dr Alexandra Hoare (History of Art, University of Bristol) and Professor Beth Williamson (History of Art, University of Bristol).

Wider Research Interests

My wider research interest is the relationship between the Bible and visual culture, specifically two-dimensional static images i.e. paintings, drawings, etc. I am fascinated by the ever-increasing dialogue between biblical studies and art history and my research intends to contribute to this interdisciplinary conversation. I am particularly interested in providing in-depth analyses on specific paintings, amalgamating both theological and historical considerations.

I also hope to develop the central hypothesis from my Masters thesis on the stark differences between the modes of visual biblical interpretation in the Lutheran Reformation and that in the Counter-Reformation.
