I read English at Durham University in the early 1970s, worked at a variety of jobs and then completed my MA in Modern American Fiction at Exeter in 1990, writing a dissertation on the Jewish American short-story writer, Grace Paley.

I have been a psychiatric patient all my adult life, with a total of approximately two years as an in-patient (much of which was spent in a therapeutic community at Bethlem Royal Hospital in the 1970s) and 23 years in psychotherapy.  This has been very limiting in career terms, but has nevertheless provided interesting insight and experience.  It has also given me the impetus for my PhD studies.
