Project Summary

I am an AHRC-funded student affiliated with the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

My PhD focuses on the life and works of William Barnes, the nineteenth-century teacher, poet, philologist, antiquarian and rector from Dorset. In my research, I am exploring how Barnes's prose works provide new insights into his poetry and our encounters with Barnes as a rural, regional writer.

Supervisory Team

I am supervised by Professor Angelique Richardson at the University of Exeter and Professor Andrew Bennett at the University of Bristol.

Wider Research Interests

My wider research interests include poetry of place, anxiety and transition; literary works of rural and coastal geography; literature and music of south-west England, its prosody structure and sound; Eighteenth and nineteenth-century popularisation of lyric and ballad constructions, in both literary and musical forms; the British Folk Revivals, c.1765-1910 and 1960-present.
