Project Summary

My thesis will offer a study of the Latin concept of fastidium and its particular use within Catullus’ poetry. As fastidium is not explicitly mentioned I will need first to generate a new methodological framework to analyse the form that this emotion concept takes, the associated metaphors and its relation to wider social situations.

Wider Research Interests

My MA thesis focused on investigating how societal attitudes have affected the reception of Elagabalus from the 17th century until the present day. Along with an exploration of how modern scholars can learn from the mistakes of past historians in a world where our own understanding of masculinity and gender is still evolving. This study influenced my wider research interests which includes concepts of language, gender and power throughout Late Republic and Imperial Rome, along with how texts from this period have been received.
