Project Summary

An investigation into farming practice and the maintenance or improvement of soil organic carbon levels.

The focus of this project is to investigate and assess the compatibility of reducing the localised environmental impacts of contemporary agricultural practices whilst maintaining and/or improving levels of soil organic carbon (SOC).  The overall aims of the PhD are to offer an in-depth, empirically grounded analysis of the policy and land management practices that contribute to the maintenance and/or the improvement of SOC levels on agricultural land, to investigate the contradictories and qualifications that complicate the issue of SOC on agricultural land for farm managers and to consider how these contradictions and qualifications are negotiated and reconciled through farm practice.
