Upon graduation with a BSc honours degree in geology from the University of Sierra Leone (USL), I spent 3 years as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Geology, USL. I then pursued an MSc course at the International Institute of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation which is now part of the University of Twente, Holland. My MSc course had a strong geo-information component in which emphasis were placed on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I specialised in Applied Geophysics. I returned to the Department of Geology USL as a lecturer, but this time I combined that job with working as a geologist/geophysicist for African Aura Mining (AAM) and its subsidiary companies. I was one of a few of their staff members to have worked in all their projects (gold, diamond and iron ore) in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Cameroon. I resisted the temptation to quit my job as a lecturer and found time during regular field breaks and in between projects to perform this duty. With AAM and its subsidiaries moving from the exploration phase to mineral development and mining phase I decide to embark on a PhD course in Geometallurgy which is a relatively new area and deals with how the study of the geology and mineralogy of rocks influences their metallurgical response and hence their overall economic return.
