Wider Research Interests

Matthew's research interests are to develop, lead and collaborate on a programme of work to examine the factors that govern exercise (in)tolerance in health and disease.

Recent research activities have included examination of running shoe design, running style, and dietary supplementation (specifically, beta-alanine, nitrate rich beetroot juice) on exercise performance and metabolism.

His current work, examining the role of endogenous ketone production on the metabolic efficiency in people with type 2 diabetes (DAMES study), has been funded by AstraZeneca UK Ltd and incorporates invasive (muscle biopsy) and non-invasive (e.g., near infrared spectroscopy, thoracic impedance) methodologies.

Matthew has worked in collaboration with a number of commercial companies including Nike Inc., PepsiCo, MAS Industries, Lumo and Technogym.
