Project Summary

The working title of my thesis is "Building Realism: Architectural Metaphor in the Mid-Victorian Novel." My project developed from my fascination with George Eliot's use of the labyrinth metaphor in her novel, Middlemarch. By internalizing the labyrinth image within the minds of her characters, Eliot creates a navigable, psychological space. My research traces the significance of similar images of architectural internalization in Bronte's Villette and Dickens' Bleak House. I am particularly interested in moments when we see a heroine narrate with an architect's eye.
