English Language I Post Foundation

English Language I Post Foundation is an introduction to academic writing. Emphasis is placed on understanding the writing process and being able to apply it to a number of different academic essay genres. Focus is also placed on the development of critical and reflective thinking skills via an autonomous online learning program comprised of Critical Reading & Writing and a Reflective Learning Journal. As well, the course engages in vocabulary and paraphrasing units aimed at developing a student’s overall writing general abilities.  

Course Objectives:

  • Develop academic essay writing proficiency
  • Enhance reading comprehension and synthesis abilities
  • Expand academic vocabulary through context-based activities
  • Explore the critical thinking paradigm
  • Encourage independent and collaborative learning skills

Student Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course the students will be able to

  • Use, organize and present ideas in the format required for academic writing, with: an introduction, including a hook, background information and a thesis statement, a three-part body with each paragraph having a topic sentence and supporting sentences, and a conclusion summarizing the main ideas.
  • Use sequence markers and transition words correctly.
  • Compose academic essays, with emphasis on the following genres:
  • Causal Analysis & Effects Analysis Essay
  • Argumentative Essay
  • Demonstrate understanding and use of academic vocabulary in higher-level texts.
  • Identify and comprehend etymological elements (prefixes, suffixes, etc.)
  • Apply critical thinking skills to reading and writing assignments.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of text contents and structural elements.
  • Make use of paraphrase, including appropriate reference to original text.
  • Employ logical argument for and against an issue.
