I have been involved in archaeology for nearly 20 years - primarily in Wiltshire but more recently across the south-west. In that time I have filled a number of professional, educational and commercial roles. Educational positions have included Lead Tutor for Archaeology at the Centre for Lifelong Learning, University of Bath; Community Archaeologist for ACE at Swindon College and currently teaching archaeology for New College, Adult Education Department.
Commercially I was QinetiQ Archaeologist at MOD Boscombe Down (1997-2008) covering all archaeological work across a 640 hectare site. This included all planning and preparatory work in conjunction with Wilts County Council, MoD and English Heritage, watching briefs, excavation and liaison with commercial units (Wessex Archaeology & AC Archaeology predominantly). If there had to be a highlight to my career so far it would be being credited with the discovery of the Boscombe Bowmen – a significant multiple Beaker burial. I have just returned to the post (July 2013). I also undertake watching brief for Talits Archaeology - a small contractor who operates in the south-west.
Recently I spent a year leading the Wiltshire Archaeological Field Group; I am a member of the Industrial Archaeology Committee for Wiltshire and President of Royal Wootton Bassett Historical Society. When not attending to those activities I author historical texts, concentrating on the 20th Century even though my last publication was on the Prehistoric sites of Wiltshire! I also form part of the editorial team for the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine, and, from 2011, have been a subject editor for Ex Historia.
Initially interested in most periods, currently my research focusses on The Archaeology of Mass Destruction: Secret Landscapes and their Interpretation.
