I grew up in Dornoch a small town of the Scottish Highlands 45 miles North of Inverness, surrounded by great beaches and better golf courses. Upon completion of my school education at Dornoch Academy I moved to University of Glasgow to undertake a BSc(Hons) in Parasitology. This opened my eyes to the complexity of parasites, their development/molecular biology, and their interaction with the host. This increased apetite led me to a PhD project at the University of Exeter (Sept 2009) to begin studies investigating the role of secreted and membrane proteins in the microsporidian/host interaction. I was attracted to microsporidia because of the peculiarities of their genomes, cell biology and infection.
