Project Summary

My PhD project at the University of Exter is a book-length series of poems inspired by the Anglo-Roman Hoxne Treasure currently at the British Museum and the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard currently at the Birmingham museums. This series uses the concept of buried treasure as a metaphor for emotional life by looking at the poetic nature of objects: the Hoxne Treasure evoking a series of love poems and the Staffordshire Hoard a series of poems on war. Along with these poetic texts, I am also writing a work of critical theory on the dark lyric, or poetry in which the lyric impulse is turned inward to create a poetry of loss. The critical thesis will also examine how words and objects become imbued with emotional significance.
